A study presented at the 2002 International AIDS Conference in Barcelona, Spain, found that the most common cause of death among people diagnosed with AIDS is liver failure1 - a direct result of the toxicity associated with "AIDS drugs." This fact, coupled with the well-documented non-specificity of the tests2, leads to a compelling question:
Are healthy people being prescribed deadly pharmaceuticals, based on non-specific blood tests and dubitable interpretations of t-cell count tests3?
Furthermore, among those who are genuinely immune-suppressed, if commonly used blood tests do not actually detect HIV4, could we as a society be minimizing the negative health effects of long-term recreational drug use5, and the pervasive malnutrition under which developing nations suffer6?
How We Got Here
On April 23, 1984, Dr. Robert Gallo announced to the world that he had discovered "the probable cause of AIDS." Gallo's statement was made at a press conference, circumventing essential rules of scientific process: No research study providing evidence for his hypothesis about HIV had been published in any scientific or medical journal prior to this public announcement.7 By the following day, the New York Times had turned his tentative statement into a certainty with front page reports on the "AIDS virus." Gallo promptly filed a patent for an HIV antibody test, and funding for research into other non-contagious, non-viral causes of AIDS came to an abrupt halt.
The evidence Gallo proposed for his hypothesis was published several weeks after the press announcement. The research described in this paper revealed that he could not find HIV in more than half the AIDS patients he studied, and while he was able to detect antibodies in most, antibodies do not cause or predict infection and are actually an indication of immunity to a disease.
The high correlation that appears to exist between an "HIV+" test result and AIDS is not proof of causation, but rather an artifact of the AIDS definition. AIDS is defined as any one of 29 previously known diseases that occur in a person who also has a postive HIV antibody test. These diseases are only called AIDS in those who test "HIV+", although these same diseases are also found in people who test HIV-negative. All 29 AIDS diseases have known causes and treatments unrelated to HIV.
Excuses, Excuses
"Virologists have nothing new to offer. They keep coming up with excuses, they find constant growth and change in the virus structure, it evades, attacks, strange things, but none of them has the courage to explain properly how these things could possibly be so." - Dr. Alfred Hassig, Emeritus Professor in Immunology at the University of Bern
Since the beginning, AIDS has seemed to be an exception to many rules of virology. It is the only disease category in which the presence of antibodies is equivalent to a diagnosis of a terminal illness. It is also the only reportedly terminal virus one can be carrying for a decade or more, without noticable symptoms.
Is the whole edifice of the contagious AIDS theory based on excuses made by an industry unwilling to question an inaccurate, yet profitable, hypothesis? Was the theory of healthy carriers merely an excuse for the fact that no direct link existed between "risky" sexual activity and illness? Is the "mutation" theory of HIV just an excuse to explain the failures of the pharmaceutical drug regimens? Is the theory of "failing" drugs an excuse to cover up the fact that the drugs eventually cause illness and death?
Why HEAL?
HEAL believes that debate and open inquiry are fundamental parts of the scientific process and should not be abandoned to accommodate the HIV hypothesis. The tenets of free discussion that we embrace are essential ingredients of progress and discovery. HEAL maintains that a solution to AIDS can only happen through honest, open discussion and an unbiased evaluation of the facts.
